Artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool for addressing climate change

Climate change produce a profound influence on ecosystems, natural resources, and human communities worldwide. As technology advances, artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a potential instrument in the battle against climate change. It offers innovative solutions to confront the intricate challenges our planet faces, particularly given its capacity for extensive data analysis and automated learning, which can prove to be fundamental across various climate-related fronts.

It is crucial to emphasize that AI is not a magical solution. Its "success" depends on the quality of the data and algorithms employed, along with ethical considerations regarding privacy and equity. Collaboration among scientists, engineers, governments and communities is imperative to fully harness the potential of AI in combatting climate change and forging a more sustainable future. Also, it is noteworthy to highlight the complexity of the ongoing debate surrounding the impacts produced by new technologies [1].

With that in mind, here are some instances of how these technologies are being applied in the realm of climate:

Environmental Monitoring and Forecasting: AI can process vast quantities of data from sensors, satellites and climate monitoring stations to furnish more precise information on climate events. These include storms, hurricanes, droughts and floods. This assists governments and organizations in implementing preventative and mitigation measures.

Energy Efficiency: AI is employed to optimize energy consumption in buildings and infrastructures, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. AI algorithms can automatically regulate heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems based on usage patterns and climatic conditions.

Sustainable Agriculture: AI facilitates precision agriculture, enabling farmers to monitor soil and crop conditions. This leads to a more efficient utilization of resources such as water and fertilizers, while also minimizing deforestation and the conversion of natural lands.

Water Resource Management: Intelligent water management is fundamental in addressing climate change. AI can analyze river flow data, reservoir levels, and rainfall patterns to optimize water distribution, reduce wastage, and ensure sustained access to water resources.

Emissions Mitigation: AI can also play a critical role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. It is employed to optimize transport networks, promote electric mobility and develop emission forecasting models that help in making policy decisions.

Research and Innovation: AI accelerates scientific research related to climate change, assisting scientists in analyzing large datasets, simulating complex scenarios and developing innovative solutions for carbon capture, renewable energy storage and low-emission technologies.

Early Warning for Natural Disasters: With the help of AI, it is possible to create advanced early warning systems for extreme weather events. This enables communities to prepare in advance to the disasters and minimize human and material damages.
